Producer x Kits Creative Highlight: Ethan Carlson

Ethan Carlson has worked with some of the biggest names in music and advertising. Ethan has recorded with Barry Gib from the Bee Gees, and has toured with and run studio sessions for Taio Cruz, Julia Michaels and Jesse McCartney. In his advertising work, Ethan recently 2x’d his writing process when composing for a Fortune 500 giant. Read on to see how Ethan used Kits AI to get a stress free thumbs-up without leaving his home studio.

On a recent project, a Fortune 500 client contacted Ethan to write music for a major ad campaign. They wanted a 4 part harmony with both male and female voicing as the main score for the ad. Instead of submitting his demo with just his voice, he was able to use Kits to present the demo in any range or gender the client wanted to hear. Ethan recorded himself and AI Converted his voice using the Female Broadway and Male Traditional Pop voices.

After that, Ethan dropped these Kits vocals into Logic pro, did some minor left right panning and ended up leaving the vocals mainly untreated, save for some reverb, EQ and a Distressor.

He ended up with a full-fledged vocal demo, with female and male voices in registers he can’t sing in, all while never having to contact another human. “This was a pretty quick turnaround, I had to get it approved pretty quick. Their reaction to the demo was ‘go ahead!’.”

The Kits AI vocal demo ended up being the final reference for the professional session singers on the final song. “With Kits, I can quickly get my ideas together and then often times I’m recording those ideas with a pro singer. Every singer learns parts differently, and sometimes sheet music, or my own vocal reference isn't the ideal way to present parts. Some of them just want to hear it in a range or tone that's closer to what they'll end up singing - it’s easier that way.”

As an ethically-conscious producer, it’s important to Ethan that AI Art isn’t the big bad wolf that steals from human artists. “I wanna make sure there are ethical decisions within the AI platforms I use.
