Producer x Kits Creative Highlight: Disco Fries

Disco Fries is a chart-topping American music production duo from New York, consisting of Nick Ditri and Danny Boselovic. In 2019, their single Concrete Heart peaked at #1 on both Billboard’s Dance Music Charts and Media Base Dance Radio Charts, becoming the #11th most played dance song of the year. The duo is endorsed by FabFilter, an industry-leading plugin company and they were recently named one of VIBE magazine’s “30 DJs to Watch”.

Disco Fries recently used Kits.AI vocals on their major single release “Turn The Lights Off”, which premiered on Tomorrow Land Radio and is available on all DSP’s. The track was released on tight timelines that producers of their caliber are expected to adhere to. The pressure of dropping major releases on a monthly cadence means taking the time to pay and work with a vocal artist is not always feasible.

“Originally we were gonna go out and find a hip-hop vocalist for this record. But we were on a tight timeline. We were under the gun this time” Weighing his options, Disco Fries producer Nick decided against the $1,000 price tag of hiring an artist, choosing instead to leverage AI voice technology.

Nick ended up rapping the vocal line himself. He wrote and recorded a high tempo vocal line in his baritone register that drummed up anticipation for the drop. “I pre-processed the vocal, then ran it through 4-5 different models on sight. We love G-House records. We wanted that same sound for a voice” Out of the models he tested, he landed on the Male Rap voice for the final vocals.

Then he put it in his DAW and used Ableton stock plugins, EQ and OTT to saturate the vocal. “On this record we used Little Alter Boy to formant shift it too.” After these additions, he finished the track on the production side and went into mastering.

“We retained all publishing on record, all mastering rights. It saved us 4 weeks.”

Upon its release on Tomorrow Land Radio, the song received over 100k plays in its first month and over one million impressions on TikTok. The best part was, they kept all of the money they made on the record. “On this song we retained all publishing on record, all mastering rights. It saved us 4 weeks.” And the fact that the vocals were AI went unnoticed. “Nobody knew it was AI to be honest.”
